The 16th annual American Red Cross Battle of the Badges blood drive gets under way today in Wichita.
The "battle" is a blood drive that serves as the basis for a friendly competition between area police and fire departments. Whichever department donates the most blood between now and Jan. 1 - whether it be officers, firefighters or citizens who donate and pick a side - gets to keep a trophy for the next year.
People who donate for the "battle" will receive prizes that include a T-shirt. Donations can be made at the Wichita Blood Donor Center, 707 N. Main, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The Northwest Blood Donor Center, 8414 W. 13th, will be open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 23, 28 and 30.
