WICHITA — Police are searching for a man suspected of killing one man and wounding another in a shooting in south Wichita on Monday night.
Someone walked up to a car parked next to Perfection Auto, 4150 S. Broadway, shortly after 5 p.m. and fired several times, killing 41-year-old Stephen Smallwood in the passenger seat and wounding a 37-year-old man in the driver's seat, Lt. Ken Landwehr said.
Investigators still have no idea what the motive may be, he said.
Both shooting victims were taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. Smallwood died at 6:09 p.m., about an hour after he was shot. The other victim is expected to recover from his wounds, Landwehr said.
Both men were shot multiple times, he said.
Police hope to release a video showing the suspect and his vehicle later today. He is believed to have waited in the vehicle for about six minutes until Smallwood and the other man drove up and parked, Landwehr said.
He then walked an estimated 220 yards to where they were and opened fire, Landwehr said.
The surviving victim was having work done on his vehicle and was using a loaner car.
The shooter is believed to have driven north on Broadway in a white SUV that may have been an Envoy, Landwehr said.
Witnesses described the suspect as a black male who is 5-feet-10 to 6 feet tall, 170 to 185 pounds. One witness said he was wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt that had dollar signs on it, Landwehr said.
