The University of Kansas will open a new School of Public Health on the Kansas Medical Center campus, possibly as early as next fall.
The proposal has been presented to the Kansas Board of Regents, which could consider it by December.
Barbara Atkinson, executive vice chancellor of the medical center, says the public depends on health officials for research and accurate information, especially during epidemics.
The university has an Institute for Community and Public Health, which includes four departments. The four departments — two in Kansas City and two in Wichita — would become part of the new school.
