WICHITA — A newborn baby girl is in police protective custody after her mother decided she did not want the child, police said.
A 31-year-old man called 911 at about 6:15 p.m. Thursday to say he had the girl in his car and that the baby's mother did not want to keep her.
She had given birth to the girl at about 4 p.m. Thursday at her home in the 1600 block of North Fairmount, and then asked the man to take her.
Officers came to where the man was parked, near 16th and Hillside, to check on the infant, who was then taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center for a checkup.

The baby is healthy, Lt. Darras Delamaide said, and is now in protective custody. The 29-year-old mother was contacted at her home, he said, and she confirmed to officers she did not want the child.
State law allows a mother to relinquish custody of a child less than 45 days old without facing criminal prosecution if the baby is in good health.
