A 41-year-old man who was shot by police when he pointed a rifle at officers has died at a local hospital, authorities said.
The man was shot shortly after 2:30 a.m. today in the 8900 block of East Churchill Court, which is south of 21st Street North about halfway between Rock Road and Webb Road.
Residents in the area called 911 at about 2:20 a.m. to report shots being fired, Lt. Todd Ojile said. Officers arriving on the scene heard more shots being fired in the looping block east of the Bradley Fair shopping center.
They spotted a man with a gun in a front yard, then lost sight of him as he ran off. Additional officers were called to the area, and they cordoned off the neighborhood, though no nearby homes were evacuated, Ojile said.

The suspect, who was dressed in a white bathrobe, was spotted again a few minutes later in a cul-de-sac. He came around the corner of a privacy fence, spotted officers and leveled a high-powered rifle at them - but did not fire, Ojile said.
The officers retreated and took cover, then the man came back around the corner with the rifle pointed at them. Multiple officers opened fire, striking the man more than once.
He was taken to Wesley Medical Center, Ojile said, where he died of his wounds at 6:15 a.m. His name has not yet been released.
Authorities have learned the man used to live at the house where he fired upon officers, but moved out more than a year ago. No one is currently living there, Ojile said.
Over the course of the incident, the man fired a shot at the house behind where he was found. He also fired at a paper carrier, striking her car but not injuring her.
Authorities do not know yet if the man was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He crashed his vehicle through the garage door of his former residence before the shooting rampage began.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for the department. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is heading the investigation into the incident.
This is the second officer-involved fatal shooting in less than a week. Last Friday night, a 32-year-old man was shot to death in south Wichita after he pointed a gun at an officer as he stepped outside his apartment.
