TOPEKA | The state's six universities have asked the Kansas Board of Regents to approve increases in fees for food and housing.
The universities say the increases are needed because of increased costs and for maintenance.
The University of Kansas is seeking a 1.4 percent increase, the lowest of all proposals.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Kansas State has proposed a 3.5 percent increase; Wichita State and Emporia State, 2.4 percent; Pittsburg State, 4.5 percent; and Fort Hays State, 3.2 percent.

The regents are expected to finalize the rates next month. The proposal would make the rates effective July 1.
