Police officials are likely to release more information today about the fatal shooting of a man by a police officer after a confrontation in southeast Wichita Friday night.
The 32-year-old man was shot to death after two officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the 4800 block of East New Jersey, near Oliver and 31st South, just before midnight Friday.
As the officers arrived, a man emerged from the front door of an apartment armed with a semi-automatic handgun that he pointed at one of the officers, police officials have said. One officer's view was blocked by the door, but the other officer was within two feet of the man.
The man was ordered to drop his weapon, but he did not comply, police officials said. One officer then opened fire.
The man was taken to Wesley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Three adults and four children were in the apartment at the time of the shooting, including the man's wife and child.
Police suspect the man was intoxicated.
