Former Independence Mayor Ron Stewart died Friday after suffering two severe strokes this summer.
Stewart, 74, was an officer in the Independence Police Department for more than 30 years and a captain before being elected to the City Council in 1992 and then mayor in 1994.
During his 12 years as mayor, Independence voters approved sales taxes for improvements in streets, parks, stormwater management and public safety.
Stewart had a serious stroke June 4 and was recuperating when he had a second stroke on Tuesday, according to a statement released by his family.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn. Funeral arrangements are pending.
