WELLINGTON — Sumner County commissioners today voted to endorse the casino proposal by Global Gaming for the Wellington turnpike exit.
All three commissioners voted to endorse the Global Gaming plan. They didn't support two other proposals for Mulvane's exit.
Casino proposals must be endorsed by local governments before the developers can sign contracts with the Kansas Lottery, which will move them into the final phase of the competition for the right to develop a casino.
The commissioners voted after about a 30-minute executive session. That followed about 90 minutes of public comment on the three casino proposals earlier this morning.
Global Gaming LLC of Ada., Okla., has proposed a $255 million casino project near turnpike exit 19 near Wellington.
The two other proposals were both for exit 33 near Mulvane. Harrah's Kansas wants to build a $260 million there and Peninsula Gaming Partners of Dubuque, Iowa, has proposed to invest $300 million for the first two phases of its project.
