WICHITA — The United Way of the Plains is taking appointments for the September session of its Laid-Off Workers Center.
To set up an appointment, call the United Way's information number at 211 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The deadline to register is Friday.
To qualify for help, people must have been laid off and approved for unemployment compensation sometime since Oct. 1, 2008. They must also have been laid off from a job in Sedgwick, Butler or Sumner county, or lived in those counties at the time of the layoff.
Residents must show they have emergency financial needs and have insufficient personal resources to adequately provide food, clothing and/or shelter.
Services at the center include budget and debt management counseling, emergency financial assistance for those who qualify, assistance in applying for government programs, job training and job search assistance, continuing education information, food assistance and community volunteering information.
Child care services are available on site during appointments.
The center is at 2622 W. Central in Wichita.
