Drivers who use the Heart of America Bridge will face traffic slowdowns all week.
Construction of a $2.2 million bike/pedestrian lane will force road crews to restrict traffic flow in the northbound lanes of Missouri 9 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day until this Friday.
The bike lane under construction will extend from Third Street south of the Missouri River to 10th Avenue in North Kansas City. It will be 10 feet wide and built along the northbound lanes of the bridge.
The structure currently has two northbound vehicle lanes that are each 12 feet wide with 10-foot shoulders on each side.
There will be one 12-foot lane, another that’s about 14½ feet wide and a 10-foot wide protected area for bicyclists and pedestrians. A 2-foot wide barrier will separate bikers and pedestrians from the roadway.
