WICHITA — Micky Axton, an aviation pioneer and native Kansan who flew in World War II, will be honored today in a memorial service in Wichita.
In 1943, Axton joined the Women Airforce Service Pilots and flew as a test pilot at an Air Force base in Texas.
After the war, Axton worked for Boeing Airplane Co. as an engineering flight test crew member. She also taught biology, general science, aeronautics and debate at East High School.
Axton died earlier this year in Minnesota. The private memorial service is scheduled for this morning and will feature a flyover of World War II airplanes.
