WEST PLAINS, Mo. | Three people have been shot to death in an apparent double-homicide and suicide outside a home in rural southwest Missouri, police said.
The Howell County Sheriff's office said the three victims were found shot to death in the yard of the home in West Plains on Thursday afternoon. The dead were identified as Jerry H. Willis, 69; Elizabeth Ann Palangi, 43; and Kerry L. Palangi, 45. All were from West Plains. The Palangis were separated.
The sheriff's department said it appeared to be a double-homicide and suicide, but that the incident was under investigation. The department said no suspects were being sought.
"Law enforcement authorities feel firm that there is no reason for safety concerns for Howell County citizens resulting from this tragic incident," the department said in a press release. The department did not identify who did the shooting.
"We had a call from a neighbor next door to where this incident occurred," Sgt. Marty Elmore, a spokesman the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Willow Springs, told KY3 television station.
KY3 also reported that law enforcement officers said Kerry Palangi shot Willis and Elizabeth Ann Palangi and then turned the rifle on himself.
A neighbor, Christopher Ryan, was inside his home when he heard the first gunshot. He was one of at least two neighbors who called 911 to report the shooting.
"When I came out here, I didn't see him. All I saw was the guy chasing Ann around. After all that was over, that's when I seen Jerry, because he put another one in him," Ryan said.
Ryan and other friends and co-workers of Willis gathered Thursday night, sharing memories of their friend, who would have turned 70 next week.
They said Willis and Elizabeth Ann Palangi were both employees of Westview nursing home.
