WICHITA — "The Miracle of Father Kapaun," an eight-part series by Roy Wenzl on the life of Father Emil Kapaun, won a Sigma Delta Chi Award for excellence in journalism, contest officials said today.
The series won first place in Feature Reporting for papers with a daily circulation of between 50,001 and 100,000. The contest, which is more than 70 years old, is sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists.
Father Kapaun, a native of Pilsen, died in a prisoner of war camp during the Korean War. He has been recommended for the Medal of Honor, and the Vatican is investigating his case for sainthood.
The project also was honored by the National Headliner Awards, where it won first place for News Series.
