WICHITA — The body of a rural Augusta man who disappeared Monday night while kayaking on the Walnut River in Butler County was recovered this afternoon near Augusta, officials said.
Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy said the body of Dustin Tolbert, 19, was recovered about 3 p.m. near the old Sante Fe depot in Augusta, which is where emergency crews had been searching throughout the day by helicopter and boats.
A second kayaker, Joseph Vincello Jr., 20, of rural Towanda, was released from the hospital this morning after being pulled from the water.
Emergency responders were called to Walnut River at about 9 p.m. Monday, after the two men were thrown from their kayaks near a dam where water currents were about 15 to 20 mph, Murphy said. The water temperature was about 60 degrees, which he said is fairly cool.
Murphy said exhausted rescuers called off the initial search at 2 a.m. today before regrouping at 9 a.m.
"Every effort was made in case he made it to safety last night," Murphy said, including searching the river shore, nearby roads and the missing man's home.
