JEFFERSON CITY | A shackled 16-year-old has jumped off a Missouri River bridge while being transported.
The Missouri State Water Patrol says it is unlikely that the teen survived the fall around noon Friday. Sgt. Jerry Callahan told KRCG that no one saw the teen resurface.
Callahan says crews are dragging the bottom of the river for the boy’s body.
Missouri Department of Social Services spokesman Scott Rowson says the boy attacked two staff members while he was being taken from the Prenger Juvenile Center to another facility.
During the attack, the boy was able to get into the front seat and escape. The staff members followed after the boy, but he jumped into the fast-moving water.
Rowson says the boy’s wrists and ankles were both restrained.
Rowson could not comment on why the boy was in state custody.
