LAWRENCE | Oversized pedicabs may be carrying passengers in Lawrence by this fall, but not on the main downtown street.
Lawrence city commissioners on Tuesday approved a request to allow a 16-passenger, pedal-powered vehicle in the university town, except on Massachusetts Street. Commissioners say the pedicabs are too slow to be on the heavily traveled downtown street.
The ordinance also prohibits pedicabs from state highways or any street with a speed limit over 30 mph. And the city will be able to keep the pedicabs off streets because of traffic concerns.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports that entrepreneur Luke Stone says he hopes to start his pedicab business by this fall.
