WICHITA (--) A ceremony honoring Sedgwick County law enforcement officers who have fallen in the line of duty will be held at noon today at City Hall.
The annual ceremony pays tribute to the law enforcement officers in Sedgwick County. That number stands at 29 following the murder of Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Brian Etheridge on Sept. 28.
Etheridge was shot while attempting to make contact with the person who called 911 to report a crime on South Rock Road near McConnell Air Force Base.
He was shot in the back with a high-powered rifle, then fought with his assailant before the suspect took the deputy's sidearm and shot him a second time.
Etheridge died of his wounds at a local hospital. The suspect was killed in a shootout with other officers several hours later.
Since 1871, 19 Wichita Police officers, eight Sedgwick County Sheriff's deputies and one officer each from Derby and Clearwater have died in the line of duty.
