A man and his wife in their mid-60s were found dead of gunshot wounds Sunday afternoon in an apparent murder-suicide, Wichita police said.
Police were called to the couple's home in the 3400 block of South Everett shortly after 1 p.m. after a daughter discovered the bodies. Other family members reportedly were also at home at the time.
Police at the scene told reporters that the bodies were foundn in a bedroom, and police had recovered a weapon, but released few other details. They did not release the victims' names.
Autopsies were planned, police said.
The deaths shocked residents of the working-class neighborhood in southwest Wichita.
Stacy Lopez, who lived next to the family for the past three years, said it left her shaken.
"I came home about 1:30 and a police office told me what happened," Lopez said. "He said they had passed away."
She said the wife had been suffering from health-related problems.
She described the couple as good-hearted people. The husband would come over with his weed-eater almost weekly to help with her family's lawn; Lopez would take cookies over to reciprocate.
"He came over yesterday," Lopez said. "And there was no hint of any problems."
Her daughter, Jennie Nguyen, agreed.
"He was the type who always took in the stray cats," she said.
