WICHITA — Police today urged residents to be more careful about hiding or holding onto valuables after a spike in thefts marked the first month of 2010.
Thieves are snatching purses left unattended in carts at grocery stores, and smashing windows and pilfering laptops or other electronics left in vehicles, Lt. Mike Hennessy said.
"The common thread is they're leaving everything in plain sight now," Hennessy said.
Investigators suspect people are dropping their guard now that the holiday shopping season has passed.
"They can do so much to protect themselves, and they're not doing it," Hennessy said. "They make themselves easy targets."
