FORT RILEY, Kan. | The Army says a Fort Riley soldier has died in Afghanistan of noncombat injuries.
Pfc. Charles Williams, 29, was an automation technician from Fair Oaks, Calif. The Army reported Thursday that Williams died Sunday in Kandahar. No information about the injuries was released.
Williams was serving his first deployment in the war on terrorism. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 97th Military Police Battalion, U.S. Army Garrison, 1st Infantry Division.
Williams joined the Army in April 2008 and had been stationed at Fort Riley since December of that year.
The military says 171 Fort Riley service members have died while serving in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
