FORT RILEY — A Fort Riley soldier from California has died of injuries sustained from a noncombat-related incident in Afghanistan.
Pfc. Charles Williams, 29, was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 97th Military Police Battalion, United States Army Garrison, 1st Infantry Division. He was injured in Kandahar on Feb. 7 during his first deployment.
Williams was an automation technician from Fair Oaks, Calif. He came into the Army April 2008 was stationed at Fort Riley since December 2008.
Williams was posthumously promoted to the rank of specialist.
To date, 171 Fort Riley personnel have died while serving in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.
