NEWTON — Harvey County authorities arrested a 34-year-old man after he fired several shots near U.S. 50 and Ridge Road early this morning.
Sheriff's deputies responding to a report of a disturbance at about 1 a.m. heard several shots upon their arrival, then several more shots once they made their presence known, Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton said.
The deputies saw the man walking out of the ditch next to U.S. 50 just west of Ridge Road. He told the deputies he had been shooting at another person in the field but didn't know whether he hit him or not.
The man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Walton said. He was taken into custody, and a weapon was recovered on U.S. 50.

Additional law enforcement officers were called in to search the area for a shooting victim, but none was found.
U.S. 50 was shut down for a short time during the incident and follow-up investigation, but has since reopened.
