Lawrence's Tipsy Taxi service could become a casualty of the state’s budget problems.
For 25 years, the program has offered free taxi rides to New Year's Eve revelers. Last year, 766 people used it. DCCCA Inc. is the Lawrence group running the program. It says it needs about $2,000. And, it says, bars and restaurants that usually help aren’t providing as much money this year.
In the past, DCCCA covered any gap in funding if donations weren’t sufficient.
But now, the group, formerly the Douglas County Citizens Council on Alcoholism, says it can’t afford to cover the shortfall because of cuts in its state funding.
The state has had five rounds of cuts this year to keep its budget balanced.
