Wichita's new Intrust Arena has been selected as a site for the first two rounds of the women's NCAA Tournament in 2011.
Wichita is one of 16 cities to be picked for the early rounds. Wichita State University will serve as the host.
"This is good news," said Bob Hanson, president and CEO of the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. "It gives us an opportunity to show we can perform. A huge key is getting good teams in here. That's not in our hands at all."
WSU, arena manager SMG Wichita and the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission partnered on the bid. They also bid on the NCAA men's tourney for 2011, 2012 and 2013 but were not selected.
Wichita and Shreveport, La., will host the women's tournament for the first time.
The 2009 tournament drew an average of 4,915 fans.
The inaugural event at the arena will be country star Brad Paisley, who will perform Jan. 9. Legendary New Jersey rockers Bon Jovi will play at the arena on March 11.
Other events scheduled are the Harlem Globetrotters (Jan. 22), comedian Jeff Dunham (March 12) and singer Taylor Swift (April 1).
Building contractors are scheduled to turn the arena over to Sedgwick County on Friday.
