A St. Joseph man is being charged in the slaying of his 7-week-old son.
Ronny D. Rathman, 52, was charged Friday night with second-degree murder in the death of Donald L. Rathman.
Cmdr. Jim Connors of the Police Department said Mr. Rathman was taken into custody Thursday evening after officers were called to Heartland Regional Medical Center on a report of a child suffering from “child abuse.”
Donald was brought to the hospital by Ronny Rathman. The baby was pronounced dead at 8:18 p.m.
The body was transported to Topeka for an autopsy. Preliminary results show the child died from head trauma.
Rathman was arrested at the time for investigation of endangering the welfare of a child. He was taken to the Buchanan County Law Enforcement Center, where he is being held on $100,000 bond.
The child's mother, Angela Rathman, is being held at the Buchanan County Law Enforcement Center on a charge of abuse of a child, stemming from an earlier incident involving Donald. She is being held in lieu of $45,000 bond.
