WICHITA — A woman has been arrested in a shooting early this morning that left her estranged husband in "very critical condition" with a gunshot wound to his head, a police official said.
The shooting was reported at 4:01 a.m. in the 12000 block of West 19th North.
Police asked that the 44-year-old man's name not be released until his relatives could be notified.
Police have arrested the man's 43-year-old wife and have been interviewing her, Lt. Todd Ojile said.
The man and his wife have been separated, and he was not living at the residence where the shooting occurred, Ojile said.
Ojile said detectives are still trying to determine what led to the shooting, but a police report on the incident said that the woman reported shooting her husband during an argument. There had been no previous reports of domestic violence involving the couple, Ojile said. The couple had been married for a long time and separated for a short period, he said.
The man was taken to Via Christi Medical Center-St. Francis Campus. "He's still in very critical condition," Ojile said.
Investigators have found no evidence of a forced entry into the home, and it appears the man was unarmed, he said.
The shooting occurred upstairs while a teenage daughter was downstairs in the home, and she didn't see the shooting, he said.
The man's wife called 911, he said.
