PINEVILLE, Mo. | A judge has ruled that a former McDonald County prosecutor's office clerk accused of faking cancer to collect donations will stand trial on felony stealing charges.
Forty-two-year-old Tammy R. Young was bound over Wednesday. Young had worked as a clerk in the prosecutor's office from June 2008 until she was dismissed this July.
McDonald County Sheriff Robert Evenson says he initiated an investigation into Young earlier this year after receiving reports that the woman’s cancer claims were a fraud. She’s accused of accepting donations for treatment she didn’t need.
Defense attorney Ross Rhoades says Young never asked anyone to hold fundraisers. He also says prosecutors don’t have evidence showing either that Young did not contract cancer or that she did not believe she was stricken with cancer.
