WICHITA | A Wichita man has pleaded not guilty to setting his 10-year-old stepdaughter on fire as she slept in her bed in March.
Sedgwick County prosecutors say 28-year-old Chris Newberry doused the girl with lighter fluid and set her on fire. Several other family members were elsewhere in their mobile home at the time.
The girl survived with severe burns.
Newberry is charged with attempted murder and five counts of aggravated arson. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing and entered his plea on Tuesday.
Sedgwick County District Judge Ben Burgess has tentatively scheduled Newberry's trial for November.
