CLEVELAND | Fourteen scoreless innings in his last two starts has right-hander Zack Greinke sharing honors with Texas second baseman Ian Kinsler as the American League Co-Players of the Week.
Perhaps Greinke deserves to win in a tiebreaker since he limited Kinsler to one single while registering two strikeouts in four at-bats Saturday when the Royals beat the Rangers 2-0 in Arlington, Texas.
Greinke is 3-0 overall and has yet to allow a run this season in 20 innings. His scoreless streak extends to 34 innings over the last two seasons.
The weekly award is the first in Greinke’s career. The Royals had two winners last season: Outfielder José Guillen for May 12-18; and shortstop Mike Aviles from July 28-Aug. 3. Aviles shared the award with New York outfielder Xavier Nady.
Never miss a local story.
Kinsler went 15 for 27 in six games, including six for six while hitting for the cycle last Wednesday in a 19-6 victory over Baltimore. He previously won the award for April 9-15, 2007.
Greinke and Kinsler each receive a luxury Swiss Tourneau timepiece, suitably engraved, in recognition of their selection.
