Starting today, you’re going to pay more to ride the bus in Kansas City.
The fare is going to increase to $1.50 from $1.25. The price of a monthly bus pass will increase to $50 from $40. The price of a day pass will remain the same at $3.
The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority hopes the higher fare will cover increased costs as well as any decline in sales taxes caused by the downturn in the economy.
Sales taxes pay for nearly two-thirds of the agency’s budget, but the ATA saw an 18 percent dip in sales-tax collections in December from the same time last year.
Never miss a local story.
The fare increase has become more important in recent weeks with Kansas City considering about $7 million in cuts to transit service.
