After nearly 14 years of operation, the River Market Brewery has closed.
A sign on the door at 500 Walnut St. says "closed indefinitely."
But a message on the answering machine says: "We are closed for business and have ceased operations effective Feb. 1, 2009. We appreciate your years of support."
The owner could not be reached for comment Monday.
Never miss a local story.
The 5,900-square-foot brewpub opened in March 1995 in the former Grandma's Pie Pantry space and one time Gillis Opera House.
At the time it was one of only a few brewpubs in the city. Several other operations have opened since including a Gordon Biersch brewpub in the Kansas City Power & Light District, just a few blocks to the south.
The River Market also lost Delaware Cafe and Vivace recently. However, Vivace, at 529 Walnut St., reopened as The Redhead Lounge.
