Handyman Q&A

Q: We are thinking about installing a new toilet, and I like the smooth look of a “skirted” toilet. My husband is not sure it will fit our water drain pipes. Can a skirted toilet replace a standard toilet?

A: Master plumber Ed Del Grande answers: A “skirted” toilet has smooth sides all the way around the bowl going right down to the floor. This can help make cleaning easier, and the look is trendy. In most cases, you can replace a standard toilet with a skirted toilet. But it usually requires extra labor because it mounts differently to the toilet flange. And the fixture itself can cost more than a standard toilet.

Cactus, succulent show

You can see all kinds of cactuses and succulents and buy unusual specimens at an event this weekend at Botanica. The South Central Kansas Cactus and Succulent Study Group will have a show and sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the new event center at Botanica. The show plants will be ones grown by members of the group, and a vendor from Oklahoma will be selling cactuses and succulents. Admission to the show is free.
