Arbor Day giveaway

Associated Integrated Marketing and several other businesses will team up to give away 750 trees Friday morning to celebrate Arbor Day.

This will be the eighth year for the Care-a-Ton community giveaway, and it will start this year at 6 a.m. in front of the Warren Old Town Theatre at Second and Mead. (Or earlier, if you’re there after the 5 a.m. set-up starts.) The trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, one per person. The trees are usually gone by about 8 a.m. or so.

Four types of trees will be available: red maple, Ann magnolia, dawn redwood and post oak. Volunteers will load trees into vehicles and give out planting tips. For more information, see the website

See details of another Arbor Day event in the Gardener’s Almanac on Page 2C.

In bloom at Botanica

Tulips and other spring blooms are in flower at Botanica, including this Malus x scheideckeri Red Jade weeping crabapple in the Beverly R. Blue Teaching Garden.

This week in the garden

We got some needed moisture, but cold weather set back planting this week. Master gardener Everett Price of Haysville says the below-freezing temperatures hurt new growth on lilacs and viburnum flowers. His vegetable greens are continuing to grow, though, so he removed the cages that were protecting their tender early growth from rabbits. He noticed needle-like holes in the arugula and the mustard, the work of flea beetles, so he sprayed the plants with neem oil.

This week on video, Everett shows how to make plant markers using the slats of window blinds. See the video at
