Planting and preserving class

A workshop Feb. 13 at the Extension Center will cover how to plant a garden according to the amount of food you would like to can or freeze for future use. It will also cover preservation methods, tools and materials. The workshop will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Meadowlark Room at the Extension Center, 7001 W. 21st St. The cost is $5. Register by Feb. 12 at plantpreserve.eventbrite.com or 316-660-0100.

Botanica Family Fun Fair

Families can take part in crafts and other activities and visit the gardens of Botanica, all for free, during Botanica’s annual Family Fun Fair on Feb. 1. Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Botanica volunteers will lead the activities, intended to educate all ages about nature and wildlife.

Bird-feeding tip

Birds need fresh water for drinking and bathing in winter. An elevated birdbath will attract a range of songbird species, but it should be refreshed with tap water at least twice a week. Immersion heaters are available to prevent freezing. If possible, place a feeder near shrubbery to provide cover against cats and hawks.
