Q. I’m so tired of granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances. Are there any other kitchen redesign trends that don’t include those tired elements?

A. We’ve seen colored metals in stoves, and for quite a while a Canadian company has made colored enamel stoves that look a bit retro. It’s nice to have that pop of color; appliances don’t have to be matchy-matchy. Glass-door front refrigerators come in narrower and very wide models these days. Silestone holds up nicely on countertops and comes in lovely colors. That thick, almost slab style looks good atop any cabinets. If you have the space, think about a movable work table – handsome or utilitarian – instead of an island.

Homegrown-cooking lecture

Master gardeners Lori Thomas and Linda Courtney will share some of their favorite and easy recipes for cooking with homegrown vegetables (whether your own or bought from the farmers market) during a lunchtime lecture Wednesday at Botanica. The lecture, at 12:15 p.m., is included in Botanica admission ($7 for adults). Syl’s will serve lunch from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for $7.
