A festival based on night markets in China will be held Aug. 10 at Botanica as a benefit for its new Chinese garden.

The Chinese Night Market Festival will feature 15 vendors offering Asian food, entertainment including dancers, and arts and crafts, said Botanica director Marty Miller. Hours will actually start before nighttime — at 4 p.m. — and will go until 8.

The cost will be $7 for adults, and $5 for Botanica members. Children 12 and under will get in free.

The festival will be inside Botanica and outside on the Terrace.

The Chinese garden will be built near the entrance to Botanica, alongside an events center that is under construction. Work on the garden is expected to start in spring 2014.

The festival is the result of a desire by the city’s sisters cities committee to do something to benefit the garden, Miller said. The Chinese garden is being inspired by Wichita’s sister city of Kaifeng in China, and next weekend’s festival is being inspired by nighttime markets on the streets there, Miller said.

“We’re going to try to replicate the night market as much as possible. In the future we’ll probably have it in the (Chinese) garden itself.”

The festival will help raise money to buy art, sculptures and amenities for the Chinese garden. Money is already in place for the garden itself and its structures.

Botanica has a committee that is helping with the design of the garden, including the art, Miller said. “The more you learn about Chinese gardens, it's the intricacy that makes them different from anything else.”
