Happy first day of fall! – It’s a great weekend to do any number of things outdoors, including revamping the lawn, replanting things that died over the summer, cleaning up, visiting a nursery or farmers market or pumpkin patch.
Plant – Pansies, mums, spinach, lettuce, fescue grass seed or sod, trees, shrubs, perennials.
Inventory your plants for possible donation – If you have plants that you would like to donate to the Sedgwick County Zoo before you lose them to the first freeze, put Oct. 20 and 21 on your calendar. That weekend, the zoo will accept donations in its parking lot from 8:30 a.m. to around 4:30 p.m. Plants that will be accepted: tropical plants, perennial plants and cactuses (on a case-by-case basis) that are in pots larger than 12 inches. Annuals of any size will not be accepted. If your plant is too large to deliver, the zoo will pick up plants the following week, until its greenhouses are full. Call 316-266-8313.
CSA talk – Kevin Ford, who runs an organic CSA in St. Leo, near Inman, will speak at the meeting of the Wichita Organic Garden Club at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Botanica. The meeting is open and free to guests.
Final Tuesday on the Terrace – The final Tuesday on the Terrace of the season at Botanica will be Tuesday, featuring the Mudbugs performing at 6 p.m. It’s included in Botanica admission. Food and drink will be for sale from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The gardens are open until 8.
