Small-space suggestions• Every room should have three sources of illumination, which will bounce off walls and create a visual expanse, Apartment Therapy founder Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan says.
• Limit the color palette of a small room, he says. He likes off-white in all its iterations, with bright white on ceilings and dark floors to calm and to ground, and to make the walls seem higher.
• Create a faux foyer – an important part of the psychological experience of coming home, says designer Elaine Griffin. Sit a decorative cube or box next to the door with a tray for mail, and perhaps a shelf above for keys, a flower and a fragrant candle. Mount a mirror above the shelf.
Biggest tomato in town
The biggest tomato at Tomato Day last week at the Extension Center may have been the biggest ever in the contest, extension agent Rebecca McMahon said. It at least was the largest since records started being kept in 1997. Desiree Read’s Pomodoro Costoluto weighed in at 3 pounds, 0.2 ounces. The previous record was 2 pounds, 9.6 ounces, in 2003. Read said she grew the tomato in compost soil with well-water drip irrigation – and no fertilizer.
