Family Fun Fair today — Just in time to beat cabin fever, Botanica's annual free day of fun for families is today. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., families get free admission to the gardens and can participate in more than 10 indoor activities, including making origami butterflies, bird treat strings and grass heads. Visitors can also take a winter explorers walk and see the berries, barks and foliage in the gardens. The first 75 families will receive a free birdhouse.
New plant selections talk — Dan Parcel of Kaw Valley Greenhouses will be at Botanica on Wednesday to talk about the greenhouses' new selections for the coming growing season. The lunchtime lecture, at 12:15, is included in admission.
Project Beauty luncheon —Bringing train service back to Wichita will be the subject of the speaker at a Project Beauty luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Wichita Airport Hilton. The cost is $16.75. Debra Fischer Stout, president of the Northern Flyer Alliance, will be the speaker. The alliance is promoting a plan to bring back train service to Wichita. African violet meeting — The public is invited to the next meeting of the Wichita African Violet Study Club, at 1 p.m. Friday at Botanica. The topic will be grooming plants for the club's show in March. Admission to the meeting is free.

"An Evening to Remember" in Hesston — A fundraiser for Dyck Arboretum of the Plains in Hesston features an evening at the home of Jeff and Marcy Thiesen in Hesston that they call the Castle on Bluegrass starting at 6 p.m. Feb. 12. The house features distinctive architectural detailing. Food will be catered by Claire Williams. The cost is $45. Reservations must be made before Tuesday by calling 620-327-8127. A concert by Erin Bode will follow at Dyck Arboretum at 8 p.m. It will cost $20.
Daffodil Days — The American Cancer Society is taking orders for daffodils for its annual fundraiser. Orders will be taken until Feb. 17 for a bunch of daffodils (about 10 stems) for $10; a glass vase with a bunch of daffodils for $15; and a bunch of daffodils and a Boyd's stuffed bear with a daffodil on one paw and the American Cancer Society logo on the other for $25. Proceeds will go for research and for programs and services in Wichita to help cancer patients.
