Since we're featuring men on today's cover, let's take this opportunity to share an important men's fashion trend: flat-front pants.
Lose the pleats, guys. Flat is where it's at.
"We've gone from selling zero flat-fronts to 40 percent in the past two years," J.V. Johnston said.
He should know. He has been in the menswear business as a buyer and salesman for a long time at Johnston's clothing store.
Have tan, will travel — When Jamie Tabor Schmidt handed me her new business card, I shouldn't have been surprised to see that her new venture has a funny name.
After all, this is the woman who named her lip balm Chicken Poop.
"When I had chapped lips, my grandpa would tell me to put chicken poop on them so I wouldn't lick them and make them worse," she explained.
But what is White Teefe? It's her mobile spray-tan company. She packs up a pop-up tent and a spray gun and delivers her service to people who want a tan but don't want any UV damage.
So why White Teefe?
"Your teeth look whiter when you have a tan, and I had to add something funny," she said.
Her idea for an in-home service started percolating when she got a spray tan before going to Hawaii.
"With my background in the beauty industry I thought it was something I could do, and do it so it was very convenient for the customer," she said.
She got the necessary training and made sure the spray product she was using was FDA-approved and mostly organic.
"It's made from organic sugar cane and it has aloe vera, cranberry extract and walnut extract, and DHA, which is what tans the skin. It's actually good for your skin and it smells good," she said.
She charges $40 for a house call, but says she is mostly doing parties where a hostess gets four or more friends together. "Then it's only $20 a person and the hostess is free," Jamie said.
She says the tan will last a week to 10 days, if you follow the guidelines: Exfoliate before you're sprayed, avoid activities that will make you perspire for several hours after being treated, don't swim or take a shower for at least four hours and don't use bar soaps or other products with a high pH factor.
If you want to have a party for several of your pale friends, call White Teefe at 316-210-6770.
Jamie says most of her customers are women, but she has done spray tans on some men. So what does one wear when getting sprayed?
"People wear what they're comfortable in, usually a swimsuit, but a few have gone commando," she said.
I couldn't resist asking if any guys were among those going au naturel.
"Yes, and I was a little uncomfortable at first, but then I just sort of made a joke out of it," Jamie said.
I wasn't about to ask what kind of jokes.
Jamie is a creative woman who is always thinking ahead. It's going to be fun to see what her next venture is — and what she'll name it.
