Changing out your summer clothing for fall can be hard when you’ve enjoyed wearing something.
It’s the item you get compliments on. You feel pretty when you wear it. It’s comfortable. You may have paid more for it than you usually spend, but you don’t regret it because it’s perfect. You don’t want to put it away.
Instead, add pieces to it. Top the dress that got you through three weddings and a memorable date night with a jacket or trendy short coat, and it’s ready for fall.
That favorite top you wore with everything from shorts to skirts will work fine if you add a sweater and maybe a scarf and pull on your jeans. Think darker colors, heavier fabrics and you’re set.
It’s layering, and you’ve done it for years. When the weather is still too warm for chunky sweaters, add light jackets in fall colors over cotton tops, shirts and dresses. This fall, you also can choose from a wide range of trendy scarves and easy add-ons such as ponchos and vests.
Leggings can stretch the season of a dress or skirt. A change from bare legs and sandals to leggings and boots bridges two seasons with ease.
Mary Bengston, a buyer at Nouveau, suggests three things for your transitional wardrobe: feather-weight cashmere, dark florals, and deep, rich color contrasts.
Be creative and don’t put those favorite pieces away. It’s easy to make them work for another season. And if you’re wearing one of your pricier summer pieces this fall, you’ll have another reason to justify buying it.
