You don’t have to wait until the Super Bowl to catch some of the funniest TV commercials. A new spot for Old Spice is going viral.
Just in case you wondered how a major corporation could make feeling wistful about a child’s impending adulthood into something incredibly creepy, Old Spice is here to show you.
The company’s “Momsong” commercial, part of its “Smellcome to Manhood” series, features moms who really, really hate the fact that their teenage sons are growing into men.
I confess that my knowledge of the feelings meant to be represented by the “moms” in this commercial doesn’t exactly come from experience; my daughter’s still quite young and I don’t have a son. Still, this commercial’s music and imagery set my nerves on edge.
The spot, which aired for the first time this month during televised football games, includes a song with lyrics such as “Oh, I didn’t see it coming, but it came in a can / Now my sweet son’s sprayed into a man.”
The commercial’s moms follow their sons so closely that they’re practically on top of them. And then there’s the highlight – or lowlight – of the commercial: the mom who wears a creepy mask to pretend to be a janitor in the lunchroom at her son’s school. The moment when the janitor is revealed to be a mom is legitimately disturbing.
Old Spice, of course, is known for pushing the creative envelope with its commercials. Its “The man your man could smell like” ads featuring actor Isaiah Mustafa were incredibly popular about three years ago.
What do you think of the new commercial?
