Two Derby High School students have qualified to attend the National Forensics League speech and debate tournament in Las Vegas in June. Clinton Clare qualified in United States extemporaneous speaking and David Rose qualified in international extemporaneous speaking at the south Kansas tournament in Fort Scott on April 18 and 19.
Ariel Yager of Derby was named the South Kansas NFL district Student of the Year.
Tournament finalists from Derby were Robin Flaharty and Shaelynn French. Semi-finalists were Jeff Roebuck, Christopher Kellenbarger, Dustin Welden, Aaron Mikolajcik, Ariel Yager, Vyonis Schnell and Kayla Kuhrt.
Independent team on Monday TV broadcast
A competition between the Independent School and Lansing High School will be broadcast at 5 p.m. Monday on KPTS, Channel 8.
The match is part of the quarterfinals of Quest, a statewide academic contest.
Independent team members are Collin Armfield and Scott Yeshire, seniors, and Will Parker and Matt Werner, juniors. Coaches are Scott Huggins and Abby Kochy.
Derby student wins Friends scholarship
Shae Pelkowski, a sophomore at Derby High School, has won a $1,000 scholarship from Friends University for his fourth-place finish in a state science and engineering fair April 11 and 12 at Friends.
Bill of Rights group honors civics teachers
Ten Wichita-area civics teachers were honored for their leadership in teaching the U. S. Constitution and Bill of Rights by the Bill of Rights Institute April 25 at the Hyatt Regency Wichita.
They are Lon Beadles and Kathy Saar, Southeast; Donald Hapward, Collegiate; Lisa Heiert, Rocky Stone and Bev Lucas, West; Chris Kemp, Heights; Dave McIntire, the Independent School; James Stenholm, Campus; and Gini Johnson, Wichita public schools instructional support coach.
Volunteers named Friends Education
Business and community volunteers were recognized April 5 at the 2008 Friends of Education ceremony at Stucky Middle School. The awards are presented by the Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force.
Wichita recipients:
Credit Union of America, for its teacher grants program, school supply drive and other financial support.
Cargill, for its support of a North High college prep course for disadvantaged students; the district's Education EDGE foundation and its Cargill Cares program.
Lynn Rogers, school board vice president.
Other area recipients:
