For most girls, their foray into makeup is brought on by the urge to appear grown up, mature, worldly. Fast-forward several decades and makeup becomes a totally new tool, no longer used to advance one’s age, but instead to slow the clock.
Just as makeup once made you feel like a grown woman, it can now make you feel like a girl. You just need a few tricks.
To make eyes look younger and brighter, opt for natural eye-shadow hues and avoid frosty shadow colors at all costs. Shy away from dark eyeliners, especially under the eyes, where pigment can get caught in fine lines.
Get full, lush lashes by dotting the upper lash line with a fine application of liquid liner. Further fake full lashes by coating lashes in a lash primer before applying generous coats of mascara. Or opt for a product like Latisse, or many of its non-prescription counterparts, that make lashes thicker, fuller and darker.
Men may lose the hair on their heads, but women lose the hair in their brows. Protect yourself now by putting down your tweezers; only removing the most errant of eyebrow hairs. Next, give yourself a virtual brow lift by filling in brows with a special focus on the top brow line, especially at the upper arch of the brow.
Skip under-eye concealer totally or use one that comes in a liquid form, not in a pot. Potted concealers typically include wax ingredients that will build up under the delicate eyes and bring focus to fine lines.
Use foundation sparingly and apply it with a damp makeup sponge. The sponge absorbs some of the extra foundation and the water thins the foundation as well. Thicker formulas will block pores and cake up on wrinkles, causing skin to look older instead of younger. Or opt for a Beauty Balm such as Urban Decay Naked Skin ($14 at UrbanDecay.com) and mix in a touch of foundation to get sheer coverage that makes skin look both younger and flawless.
A great face powder will make skin look flawless and won’t cake. Pick something with a yellow undertone to provide some glow to older skin, which can lose some of its sparkle with time. And use bronzer to highlight upper cheekbones for a more youthful-looking glow.
As you age, lips lose fullness and dreaded vertical lip lines typically appear on the upper and lower lips. There are a myriad of ways to diminish fine lip lines and bimonthly Botox injections is one of the most effective. Done correctly, Botox will smooth existing lip lines and also prevent the onset of additional wrinkles around the lips.
Most important, it’s time to invest in lip liners to fill and define lips. Opt for colors that are bright and crisp. Think red, coral and hot pink.
With these tricks you may continue aging gracefully while looking like you’ve got the clock beat.
