For hair this summer, the possibilities seem endless, according to Tambra Hiser, Susan Wardle and Tammy Kudlock of Platinum Salon, Spa & Boutique.
“Pixies; bangs; texture; fringe; hair extensions; colorful hair accessories; retro styles, especially ’60s and ’70s influences; side-swept, low ponytails; and braids are a few of the choices,” Hiser said.
Racquel Castor, a stylist at Eric Fisher Salon East, said that with warmer weather, “everyone gets the itch to lighten their hair; some want to put in more red. Some want a shorter style and layers. Even those women with long hair are wanting more layers.”
Eric Fisher, owner of Eric Fisher Salons, agreed. “As the economy is picking up, haircuts are going shorter, with some having layers around the face.”
Never miss a local story.
But he says bangs are the biggest news. “They are super for summer, whether they are rounded, cut deeper back.”
Some are thick, making a stronger statement, while others are lighter in weight, he said.
Platinum’s Wardle said “you can’t beat bangs for pulling your entire look together. Lash-grazing bangs are the focus of an entire style. Statement-making bangs are strong about the brow.”
“Braids have become a celebrity staple, seen on runways and the red carpet and are very popular for prom this season and into summer for those saying ‘I do,’ ” Hiser said.
Fisher and Kudlock agreed that if you’ve got natural curl, embrace it.
“Put the flat iron away and change it up with a fresh cut and color,” Kudlock said.
But Pam Cutler, owner of Salon Knotty, said that for some, flat irons are going to be plugged in once again to achieve super-straight locks. “Spring and summer 2013 isn’t all about messy waves and low-slung ponytails. There’s always room for an ultra-glam blow-dry and a sleek retro up-do on the runway,” she said.
Summer makeup means natural looks, a defined, full but not bushy brow and beautiful blended colors, according to Fisher.
Cutler advises to softly sculpt the face with bronzer and use rich, warm tones on the eyes for a sunny summer finish.
Castor advises putting bronzer on the “T” zone.
For the lips, “gloss is boss,” Hiser said. “It adds flirt appeal and much-needed moisture.”
Cutler said to think pink. “From hot pink lips through blushing peony cheeks to fuchsia eyeshadow, pink is the color of the season,” she said.
An item worth looking into: false eyelashes. “Lashes are back in full force,” Cutler said.
