When it comes to colors in fashion, black rules. But these days, black is waving the white flag at, well, white. "In spring and summer, white is the black answer to winter and fall seasons," says Leatrice Eiseman, who recently finished her ninth book on the subject of color.
"White is dependable, and it's always in style," she said. "Maybe not practical, but you can wear it with just about everything."
Eiseman, who is the director of the Pantone Color Institute, says white has a psychological message as well.
"White has an almost childlike naivete. It's purifying, it's clean — all the things welcome in a complicated life," she said.
Never miss a local story.
With the popularity of vivid colors this spring, white is a welcome and refreshing change.
A simple white dress is the perfect background for the colorful, bold accessories so popular this season.
"A lot of women have discovered if they want color, they'll go with the vivid colors in accessories," Eiseman said. A white dress also offers a timeless option, she said. "It always looks right."
But it's not only colorful accessories, according to Boone Downing, assistant manager at White House Black Market in Bradley Fair, 21st and Rock Road.
"White dresses are selling well. We've sold out of two styles and have two brand new styles in," she said. "They are easy to wear and look great with silver, but also look great with gold accessories."
"With a white dress, your options are endless," Downing said.
Other retailers say that white dresses are selling well. And as the temperatures have risen, the sales have too.
The variety of white fabrics range from sheer voile to cotton duck. Pay a little for a new white dress, or a lot, and choose from a myriad of styles.
It's summer. Look cool, be cool and wear a white dress. Unless, of course, you're going to wedding. In that case, you'd better be the bride.
