Here are some observations based on the snap-count data from the Chiefs’ 23-13 win over the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 3. Numbers provided by the NFL.
*Running back Jamaal Charles logged 95 percent or more of the offensive snaps for only the third time all season. He logged 99 percent of the snaps against Dallas in Week 2 and 95 percent of the snaps against Oakland in Week 6. He’s normally hovered around the 85-91 percent mark.
*In a similar vein, running back Knile Davis played only one offensive snap against the Bills, the fewest he’s had since he logged one against Oakland in Week 6. It’s a significant dropoff, particularly after he played 20 total snaps in the two previous games and drew praise from coach Andy Reid.
Interestingly enough, Davis did log his fourth special teams snap of the season and his first since he muffed a kickoff against Dallas in Week 2. Davis, who has a reputation for fumbling, made sure he didn’t repeat the error against the Bills, as he hauled in the kick and returned it 24 yards. Check out the way he looked the ball in, too (this absolutely slayed the guys on press row).
Never miss a local story.
*The Chiefs had their five-best linemen — Branden Albert, Jeff Allen, Rodney Hudson, Jon Asamoah and Eric Fisher — play every offensive snap for only the second time all season. It happened for the first time against Houston on Oct. 27.
*Receiver A.J. Jenkins did not record an offensive snap for the first time this season. He did, however, record his first snap on special teams, and it came in a rather interesting manner. He replaced Junior Hemingway as an upman on kick return and literally sprinted toward the end zone to perform a playfake with Quintin Demps. Just something to keep track of going forward.
*Veteran cornerback Dunta Robinson did not play for the third straight week, despite being one of 45 active players on gameday. It’s pretty unusual for an NFL team to repeatedly suit up a guy who doesn’t play and doesn’t contribute on special teams.
*Linebacker Akeem Jordan played 71 percent of the defensive snaps against the Bills, which tells me the Chiefs were (rightfully) concerned about the Bills’ running game. Didn’t seem to help much though, as Buffalo rushed for 241 yards.
*Linebacker Dezman Moses’ return from a toe injury sent rookie linebacker Nico Johnson to the bench, as Johnson — who logged 15 special teams snaps against Cleveland the week before — was inactive against the Bills.
*This was easy to miss, but Mike Catapano’s high-ankle sprain forced special teams coach Dave Toub to do a little shuffling. Allen Bailey filled in for Catapano as an upman on kick returns, while Frank Zombo shifted over to Catapano’s spot between the long snapper and guard on punt returns. Moses filled in at Zombo’s old spot (to the right of Catapano’s position).
