Five new Wichita schools are under construction and scheduled to open in the fall of 2012. They are:

* A $31 million high school at 53rd North and Rock Road, which is intended to alleviate crowding at Heights High. It features a 900-seat auditorium and fine-arts suite, career and technical education classrooms, a 2,400-seat gymnasium and a practice gym that will double as a storm shelter. Plans call for it to open with about 800 students, but it is designed to accommodate up to 1,200.

* A $16 million K-8 school at 53rd North and Woodlawn. It will feature three classroom wings, an 800-seat auditorium and music suites, a library and a gym that will serve as a storm shelter. It is designed to eventually become a middle school as the district grows.

* Another $16 million K-8 school at 143rd East and Pawnee, intended to relieve crowding in the district's southeast quadrant, particularly at Seltzer Elementary.

* A $10.4 million elementary at the site of Lewis Open Magnet Elementary, near Seneca and 31st South. One wing is designed to house 240 students in the Lewis magnet program; two other wings would be a new neighborhood school for 400 students.

* Ortiz Elementary, a $7.6 million school at 33rd Street North and Arkansas that is intended to relieve crowding at nearby Cloud Elementary. It will accommodate 450 students and will have a computer lab, art room, two music rooms and a multipurpose room designed as a storm shelter.
