“ True Detective” – Last weekend, we watched Matthew McConaughey nab an Oscar. This weekend, he closes out the eight-part series that might bring him an Emmy. Yes, all good things must end and so it is with this incredibly compelling, gritty, trippy, mesmerizing and occasionally maddening crime drama. In the final episode, Cohle (McConaughey) and Hart (Woody Harrelson) get an important new lead in their 17-year-old case, thanks to a detail that had been previously overlooked. Michelle Monaghan also stars. 8 p.m. Sunday, HBO
SUNDAY: “It’s time to get going again,” proclaims astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson in the opening moments of “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.” And with that, he launches a bold re-imagining of the 1980 series that made Carl Sagan famous and science fun. A great adventure apparently awaits. 8 p.m., Fox & National Geographic Channel

SUNDAY: You’ll see dead people on “Resurrection.” It’s a provocative new drama series in which deceased residents of a small Missouri town begin coming back to life – and not in a hideous zombie kind of way. 8 p.m., ABC
MONDAY: Can one gifted child save the world? That’s the question pegged to “Believe,” a new drama series from J.J. Abrams and Oscar-winning “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuaron about a 10-year-old girl (Johnny Sequoyah) who possesses incredible – but unharnessed – supernatural powers. 9 p.m., NBC
TUESDAY: The epic two-part “24 Hours on Earth” takes pains to examine, in great detail, how various animals and plants adapt over the course of a single day as conditions around them change. And somehow, they make it really interesting. 8 p.m., BBC America.
WEDNESDAY: In its second season, “The Americans” continues to dish out heaping doses of addictive intrigue. Tonight, Philip (Matthew Rhys) questions Elizabeth’s (Keri Russell) readiness for action after they complete a mission with complications. 9 p.m., FX
THURSDAY: Can “Scandal” get even crazier? We can only hope so. Now, as Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) prepares for his first debate, there’s a dirty secret that could have deadly repercussions. 9 p.m., ABC
THURSDAY: Tonight delivers the season finale of “King of the Nerds” and we’re counting on it to be royally geeky. OK, enough of that. 9 p.m., TBS
FRIDAY: The innovative news magazine show “Vice” kicks off its second season with a segment claiming that much of the $100 billion spent by the U.S. on reconstruction projects in Afghanistan has been wasted and misused. 10 p.m., HBO
SATURDAY: No, “The Grim Sleeper” isn’t about a grouchy insomniac. It’s the name given to a Los Angeles serial killer in a new film that sees a reporter doggedly investigating the unsolved murders of dozens of women. Dreama Walker and Macy Gray lead the cast. 7 p.m., Lifetime
